Daytime Flyer, the new sprinting sensation, was still catching pigeons at Sheffield on Tuesday night when he was the fastest of the four heat winners in the opening round of the BresMed Northern Sprint at Sheffield.
The Peter Wood-trained dog, who produced one of the shocks of the Sunderland Festival last week when he lowered the colours of Walshes Hill in the final of their sprint, didn’t make the best break, but he made lightning progress to the initial turn to take control and ran out a three and threequarter-length winner from Guinness Eagle in 15.87 for the 280 metres.
“He ran well but didn’t trap anything like he can,” said Wood, “it was his early pace that took him to the front and I think he might be better next time out.”
Last year’s Sprinter of the Year Geelo Vegas got back to winning ways in the first qualifier, the dog got the better of a tense battle with Methley Bridge by a short head in 16.10, two spots faster than Gainstown Storm, who landed heat two by two and a half lengths from Sneezys Balboa, while heat three went to Cuil Liam, who defeated Flashing Bolt by a short head in 16.16.
