During their flapping years, Kinsley’s bookmakers relied on the grader to protect them by careful manipulation of trap positions. In the Betfred Gymcrack Final, Peter Cronin’s  favourite Cometwopass (T2 11-10f) who would probably have won on merit anyway, benefited from the sort of early crowding that any self respecting handicapper would have considered all part of a night’s work.

As the traps opened, the white jacketed The Other Billy eased to his right, the orange jacketed Swift Chaser moved to his left. If Cometopass could clear Ballymac Healy (T1), the result would be a formality . . . .

Unbeaten in the event, the winner’s 27.18 clocking was also the fastest of the 10 races.
