Signet Goofy put in a display of class and no shortage of guts to come through late and land the Steel City Cup for trainer John Mullins , owners Lee Calcutt and Chris Waters and breeder Kevin Hutton. The fabulous Magical Bale x Forest Natalee litter of January 2020 were reared by John Mullins for Kevin Hutton with ‘Goofy’ staying with John , Lee and Chris. It was a simply superb performance by Signet Goofy who broke the heart of Move Over Cha and connections as he picked up Angela Harrison’s runner right on the line in 2876 with the official distance of a head.
A delighted Lee Calcutt speaking from his holiday base in Spain said “I’d just like to congratulate John for a top training peformance and for Kevin Hutton for allowing myself and Chris Waters to purchase Goofy. It’s fantastic for all of us involved and of course for British Breeding. What an amazing litter and that’s now 5 cat ones won by them”.
John Mullins said “I’m thrilled for the dog , the kennel , Lee and Chris who have supported me throughout and of course my thanks to Kevin for allowing me to rear a super litter for him and letting us keep hold of Goofy. We’ve not managed to win a category one since 2020 and I was beginning to wonder when we would again after a host of final appearances came and went without success. He’d really dug deep from a bad position in the first round to qualify and I actually said to Chris on the way home that night that had he not qualified and given how strongly he’d run the Champion Stakes could have been an option at Romford. Thankfully he did qualify and the rest is now history. I’m honestly still a little taken back by how he’s run , in the middle of the track I just thought another one has passed us by but boy has he come through strongly. We’ll see how he is in the next few days but the British Derby will be high on the agenda. I’d like to thank the team at Sheffield for putting on another great competition and of course all the team at Bresbet without their sponsorship we’d be lost”.
