Candy Man produced the fastest first round win of the GAIN Greyhound Nutrition Three Steps To Victory on a successful night for trainer Carol Weatherall who had four runners qualify for the 500m semi finals.
The powerful black clocked 27.59 after leading off the second bend, though racing manager Andy Mascarenhas has some reservations about his long term prospects.
He said: “He ran very well but was caught before the pick-up. It may be that he needed the run and will get stronger as the competition progresses, but I will reserve judgement until after the 500s. He will certainly be guaranteed his draw going forward as the only wide seed, and there are only three middles.
“Bombardier was also impressive though he never left the rail at any stage. I thought Alaskan Dawn ran particularly well, as did Diane Henry’s dog (Savana Eruption). Lemming Caesar ran very well among the locals and having watched Bandicoot Sammy, I don’t think the draw will bother him in the slightest.”
