The arrival on the scene of Bubbly Bluebird has sent many enthusiasts scampering to find his bloodlines. It now seems, he was a mistake!

The first thing that jumps out from Bluebird’s pedigree is that he is a 2 x 2 cross with Duke Special doubled up. Bloodlines students will rarely have seen a cross so close with the exception of an accidental mating.

Australians love their in-breeding but even they would tend to go 2 x 3, typically, Duke Special would appear as the sire of Broadstrand Xola but would appear one line further back at the very top of the pedigree (where Ballymac Maeve first appears).

So how why so close?

Michael Dunphy, brother of breeder Sean says: “To be honest it was a mistake. We thought he would be 3 x 3 and it was only afterwards that we checked the computer and realised what we had done. You wouldn’t normally go that close, you could be heading for disaster.

“When he was growing up, he just loved to gallop and we soon realised what fast dog he was in his trials .”

In fact, there were five members of the litter. Teejays Apache has two open wins on his card, Droopys Geelong has a best of 29.09 for 525 at Shelbourne. Of the two bitches, the Mark Lowther owned Droopys Bendigo has 28.76 winning for at Harolds Cross, Droopys Harbour has 17.33 trial form at Cork.

The quartet are from the second litter sired by Droopys Sydney, winner of his only race at Cork in 28.45 before injury. Sydney is a litter brother to June Harvey’s open racer Racenight Jenny and a half brother to Droopys Cain and Ashford Castle.

On the dam line, Droopys Rena produced four litters by Westmead Hawk which included Bush Paddy, and Irish Oaks/Puppy Oaks winner Droopys Twirl whose progeny include Jaytee Seville, McCalmont Cup winner Droopys Der, and the Kent Derby second favourite Droopys Who.
