Some tweaking to some of the selections this week due to meetings cancelled for fireworks.
The most significant race of the week was the Gain Nutrition Three Steps To Victory at Sheffield which went to Coolavanny Aunty. Her 38.63 was the fastest time over c&d distance since Roxholme Kristof’s final win two years ago. It was Aunty’s third Cat One win of the year (Essex Vase, Grand Prix) and the fourth of her career (Empress Stakes).
The first round of the ARC Classic took place at Sunderland and two of Aunty’s kennelmates dominated proceedings. Gold Cup winner Move Over Cha was one of only two sub-27.00 performers with a 26.86 run though that was bettered by last year’s runner-up Moanteen Mikey. The kennel were on the mark at home track Newcastle too where last week’s top dog March On Larry made himself difficult to grade with an easy win in the best top heat of the week.
The beautifully bred Mirrenofpaisley began her career in A5 at Newcastle back in May. Six months on but still a pup, she is bombing around Monmore with three wins and two seconds from six races, the latter two being A3/A2 wins in 28.51/28.42.
Meanwhile, ex-Monmore grader Lemming Extra is in the form of her life and made it three wins in her last four when turning over Burgess Hannah over the Crayford 714m course on Saturday morning.
No opens at Swindon on Sunday but the 37 kilo Druids Why So is another retains his belt with a good A1 win. That is three wins and a second in his last four.
Changeable weather made the timer almost irrelevant on at Nottingham on Monday with the going switching from +50 to -10 for the standard during the course of the meeting, before rallying again. In other words, don’t take Churchill Holly’s 30.00 at face value when landing an Eclipse Trialstake. That’s four in a row and five from six for Lynn Cook’s veteran.
At Doncaster, where Sean Parker trained hounds landed all three A1s this week, the quickest of the trio was Holly’s litter sister Swift Lethal with her fourth win in her last seven outings. The pair are daughters of Elaine Parker’s 2013 Holmes Memorial winner, Candlelight King.
Closely related and also from the Monasterevin kennel of breeder Ian Greaves is the only dog to break 28.00 at Yarmouth this week, the John Mullins trained Swift Unkind.
Open racing took place at Harlow on Wednesday though as is often the case, the timer was of limited use. Fastest of the 415m open race winners was ex Yarmouth A5 grader Charls Boy who had been beaten in his last three outings which included A5 and A6 grades.
At neighbours Henlow, defending champ Tyemekangaroodown led home kennelmate Liffeyside Blake in the week’s only A1. Back in April, Olivetree Deano was virtually untouchable at Suffolk Downs with five consecutive A1 wins. While not as prolific recently, he picked up his 12th win of the year on Thursday when taking the A1 in 23.87.
Hove lost two meetings this week, one to fireworks and one to a rainstorm. Even more bizarre, there were four A1s and none won by the Cahill kennel. Quickest on the week, by a single spot was Noramac’s Marine.
Oxford lost both Friday and Saturday evening meaning the fastest winner on the sole Thursday morning card was guaranteed the nod. He is Chris Hamblin’s Loveyouson whose 27.60 was recorded on (-20).
It was back to graded fare at Perry Barr too, though Saturday’s A1 proved quite a poser for punters with the first four in the market priced up at 11-4, 3-1 and 100-30 (x2). In fact it was one of the 100-30 chances who came out on top with Lynnnwood Assin make a successful return from a lay-off to clock 28.65.
On November 2 2021 Theresas Pet won a Romford A9 on debut in 24.69. On November 4 2022, David Mullins’ bitch clocked 23.88 when landing her second consecutive A1.
Last week’s Central Park selection was the Mullins trained Arkady following his PGR Kent Derby win. On Sunday night, the layers expected the kennel to retain the title with Famous Eight. But the honour went to travelling companion Shanbally Chris – the fastest hound over Yarmouth’s 659m course this – at a very generous 4-1.
Zoos Fred’s career began in A6 at Pelaw and although he found Westport too slippery in 25.57 last week, he was quickest on Sunday with a 25.63 run.
There was little to touch Glenvale Gav at Kinsely during the summer where he rattled up four wins in five races, including a stayer’s open. Sylvia Oakes’ black veteran went into Sunday’s A2 on a 10 race losing stretch but produced his quickest run in two and a half years.
As a March whelp, Makeitkingsydney was the youngest winner at Towcester on Saturday; but the winner of the Puppy Derby Trialstake was also the quickest with a 29.54 run.
