Sheffield is aiming to get a third Category One competition next year with the backing of sponsor Nic Brereton writes John Forbes
With the Pinpoint Pinpoint Three Steps To Victory and the Betfred Steel City Cup already operating at that level, the two men have revealed plans to take the BresMed Northern Sprint, which Brererton sponsored for the first time this week as a Category Two, up the ladder and make it a £10,000-to-the-winner competition.
Brereton says: “Having owned Geelo Vegas, who was Sprinter of the Year in 2014, I am very enthusiastic about that style of racing but do not believe that it gets sufficient financial backing, which is why I want to make our competition a Category One.”
Sheffield boss John Gilburn added: “Sheffield has always had a good association with Sky TV and we are hoping to get the race into their programme for 2016. We are extremely grateful to Nic, who has shown yet again what a great supporter of racing he is at this track.”
