Five of the six favourites were turned over in Sheffield’s Bresmed Northern Sprint first round, and three failed to make it through to next Tuesday’s semi finals. It was left to Ela Ela Genie to set the pace.
Heat 1 – Shlowdown Sally (T4 11-4f) was the market leader in the opener but she failed to handle the Carol Weatherall trained Beat Surrender (Droopys Scolari-Mohane Kate, Sep 14). Running from T3, the 5-1 shot lead home Brynoffa Jasmin by just over two lengths in 16.11.
Heat 2 saw the appearance of ante post favourite Hiya Butt (T3 4-9f) but in a messy contest, there was another victory for the all conquering litter in Forest Natalee (Ballymac Vic-Droopys Danneel, May 15). Running from T5, the 3-1 chance got home by four and a half lengths from the Laurels winner in 16.12.
Heat 3 produced the night’s biggest priced winner in Norman Melbourne’s Yahoo Benny (Mall Brandy-Calzaghe Pearl, Aug 14). Running from T2, the 10-1 chance held off Trapstyle Jet (T3 2-1f) by a short head in 16.21 with Westway Gaga (T6 5-2) taking third.
Heat 4 featured the beaten favourite in Sunday’s British Bred Sprint Coolavanny Frank (T2 5-4f), but his inexperience and lack of preparation time appears to have cost him. The race went to the prolific Ela Ela Genie (Brett Lee-Ballymac Eugenie, May 14), a 3-1 chance running from T3. Mark Wallis’ runner soon led Worsboro Spectre (T4 7-2) and won by just under three lengths in the fastest time of the year, 15.82. Young Blitz (T5 10-1) took the third spot.
Heat 5 provided punter’s only success on the night thanks to Toolmaker Rambo (Aero Majestic-Droopys Solange, Oct 14). Running from T3, Paul Young’s 6-4f led home Mashmad Eyebrows (T2 3-1) and Geelo De Sousa (T4 8-1) by three and a half and two in a sharp 15.88.
Heat 6 looked at the mercy of Roxholme Hat (T2 5-4f), though he would find two too good for him on the night. The first of them was Patrick Janssens’ Walk The Talk (Vans Escalade, Bling Bling Plum, Aug 14). Drawn six, the 2-1 chance led home Pinto Paulo (T1 6-1) by four lengths with the favourite in third.
The draw for the semi finals will be made on Wednesday morning
