The brilliant Laughil Jess has come into season and has been retired – for good this time – writes Floyd Amphlett.

The Queen of Crayford bows out with an incredible strike rate of 32 wins from 45 races (72%), headed by the 2023 Gold Collar.

Of all the attributes she has, trainer Dave Lee is hoping that Jess puts some of her tenacity into her pups.

He said: “The way she won her last race is her all over. I don’t know how she forced her way to the front, but she did. But that is her all over. She is like it at home too.

“Originally we were hoping to get a Droopys Sydney straw. I think the world of the dog, his pups are just so honest.

“But we are going with Dorotas Wildcat who is another dog who I have always liked. I understand that he is now so busy that they’ve had to take some more straws off him but look at March On Free – there are three very fast dogs in that litter – and I’m not surprised.”

By the greatly under appreciated Out Of Range ASB, Jess is out of Laughil Irene (Magic Sprite-Laughil Liz), she is one of the most potent dam lines in Irish breeding.

It has been a promising week for British breds starting with the first runner for young sire Signet Denver at Towcester.

Frank Gray’s Makeit Denverbay, an April ’23 pup out of Makeit Bombay, exited the sprint boxes five lengths behind the field and was eight behind the leader at the first bend only to be beaten by a rapidly closing three quarters of a length on his D4 debut.

Look out too for King Iggy (King Sheeran-Queen Izzy, Apr 23) at Central Park. Trained by Tony Collett for the KSS Syndicate, he has won two of his three sprints to date having similarly given the race away at the traps. This is his run on Monday.

He makes his four bend debut in a maiden open on Saturday.

Meanwhile back at the KSS kennel, the April 23 youngster King Jackson had his first four bend solo at Central Park on Monday and clocked 29.13. Jackson is by Magical Bale out of Queen Beyonce. The fastest race time on the day was 29.74.
