As was largely anticipated, Droopys Sydney became the leading open race sire for 2022 while Forest Natalee maintained her position as the number one open race dam.
Supersire Droopys Sydney, a dog who raced only once prior to injury, had finished runner-up in 2021 but finished the years with more than 250 winners to spare over 2021’s third placed Laughil Blake. Multiple winner Droopys Jet slipped down to third.
Sydney’s Cat One male winners included: Brookside Richie, Clongeel Ozzie, Distant Podge and Fromposttopillar. His top females included Bellmore Sally, Coolavanny Aunty, and Slick Sakina.
The top five sires are all ten years older (or deceased) leaving Magical Bale (Jan ’16) as the most successful of the the younger dogs. He is joined in the ten by ex-kennelmate Dorotas Wildcat (May ’15), Good News (Nov ’14) and Ballymac Bolger (Sep ’16).
Kevin Hutton’s Forest Natalee finished with more than double the number of open winners of her closest rival, 65. She also finished top in 2021 with 49 open wins.
The Cat One successes included Signet Denver (Laurels/Produce Stakes) Siget Goofy (Steel City Cup) and Signet Otis (British Breeders Stakes).
However, she didn’t finish the leading dam in terms of prize money. In a fabulous year for home breds, that honour went to Fabulous Artist with over £200K in prize money thanks to the exploits of Derby winner Romeo Magico and sister Fabulous Azurra (Empress Stakes/British Bred Derby)
In fact there were four home based broods in the top ten. They included Artist’s kennelmates Drive On Betsy and Buckos Lass, plus Kevin Ferguson’s Acomb Ruby.
