Trainer Mark Wallis has previously tipped off racegoers that he gets the best out of Adageo Bob by keeping him fresh, and that preparation paid off in the opening round of the Mitch Millward Essex Vase.

Refreshed from a lay-off and tackling the Romford six bends for the first time in ten weeks, the veteran gave a masterclass of front running. His 13.62 sectional might have been 20 spots off his personal best, but it was still quicker than the other 35 in the event as he ran away from Knockbawn Caviar by seven and a half lengths in 35.51 (all heats -30). It was his 26th win in 38 races over course and distance.

Only three spots separated the three fastest heat winners (all three will feature in the same semi) and the quickest of the trio was Grand Prix winner Bubbly Gold who tuned over kennelmate Teejayspowerhawk by four in 35.49.

Joining Adageo Bob on the 35.51 mark was the dog who beat him half a length in the Coronation Stakes Final, Soviet Kenny. The John Mullins trained black beat Coronation third, Farneys Cookie, by a head.

Another course specialist, Fivestar Clipper, completed a seven-timer over course and distance with a two length win over Uncle Paul in 35.61. (His best is 34.87).

Gold Collar runner-up Swift Whirlwind had produced the first leg of a double for the Wallis kennel with a messy win over Loughteen Pedro in 35.72. Vatican Ragnar returned to form to win the slowest qualifier in 35.86.
