It was a bitter sweet final of the Betfred Standard over 500 metres at Nottingham for trainer Charlie Lister.
His Mottos Mixer came back to form to land the £500 to the winner decider, while his Final Nike had to put down after seriously breaking his hock in the race.
Lister said: “Final Nike was good little dog who ran Nottingham so well. He had nowhere to go after the railers cannoned into him and unfortunately suffered what was a very serious injury. We’re all gutted.”
The trouble came when the moderate starting Pennys Jess rushed up the inside of favourite Bromwich Sue and moved off at the turn.
Bromwich Sue bumped into Final Nike before ending up on the floor herself. 20-1 shot Windy Night took advantage and led by three lengths into the back straight but Mottos Mixer came home strongly to score by three lengths in 29.99sec.
Lister added: “Mottos Mixer had been off for over three months before we brought him back and needed his race in the heats to bring him on.
“He looks like he may stay further. “
Lister had a double when his Iceman Frank made all in a supporting 480 metre contest to hold El Salvador in 28.60sec, the fastest time of the night.
Geraldine Kovac’s Johnny Vivaro led from the opening turn in division two to slam Southern Ramsy in 28.90sec.
Riverside Breda made it four wins from her last five races in the Sprint Trophy over 305 metres when making to all to score in 17.80sec.
Her trainer Richard Devenish’s was also on the mark with Autumn Observer, who went quickest in the heats of the Stadium Bookmakers Maiden over 480 metres when making most to beat Salacres George by over six lengths in 29.05sec.
Dave Firmager’s Romeo Zulu landed the second hat when catching Runaway Joey and prevailing by just over a length in 29.13sec.
Firmager doubled up with Fabulous Model, who relished every metre of the Maiden 680 when leading off the last turn to register a 42.23sec victory.
