The 2024 BetGoodwin Pall Mall starts on Saturday

The return of the Pall Mall in 2023 was a fillip for purists after the race had been lost following Oxford’s closure.

Links Maverick was a spectacular winner for Tom Heilbron last year and the 2024 BetGoodwin Pall Mall has attracted a deep and classy field. It begins with six heats on Saturday night on SIS.

A tricky start where Nowitsmyturn can slip around in front on the rails. Impressive in his only prior race at Oxford, he needs to get to the bend in front of the unbeaten Fire And Ice. That rival is very much in the ‘could be anything’ bracket at present. Darley Diglake trialled well here but is yet to win away from his home track of Perry Barr, albeit in very limited attempts.

A cracking heat containing the ante post favourite Aero Sacundai. He improved with each look at Towcester during his Hope Jeal Sprint win. It’s impressive then that he got within touching distance of the clock on his Oxford debut. Cooliogold had a great run through the Derby. He was unfortunate to get a Derby quarter-final that contained the first two home in the decider. Kilara Roberto was runner-up in the Derby Plate and can gain the final qualifying spot.

Long Fellow couldn’t dominate when sent off as the favourite against Aero Sacundai last week. He will be in a heated battle with King Capaldi for the first bend lead. Whoever gets to turn in front will be hard to hold. Unanimous Leon moved well in a trial here last week and can win a prolonged battle between the three seeded runners to claim a place in the semi-finals.

BGBF Puppy Cup winner Romeo Cypher returns to Oxford. He needs to be on his toes to clear Droopys Hanover to his immediate left with the pair set to have a great tussle. Dashing Dude lacks a look but he has been flying in sprints at Swindon. He could get plenty of room with Keefill Maverick inside, probably moving left from the widest draw he has experienced.

Sels 2-1-6

Another outstanding heat where Druids Say Go can add to her winning streak. She was electric in her most recent win at Romford, clocking 23.48. A recent trial here should have her spot on. After missing more than four months, Coppice Tenzin was impressive here last Saturday. The run he produced was arguably his career best. He has to clear a battle in the middle between Eze, the 2023 Pall Mall runner-up, and Baran Maggie early on.

It’s eight weeks since Union Rebel saw race action, trialling well here in recently. The track record holder is not far out of puppy status and has been a little overlooked in the ante post market. Crossfield Larry did not come away as well as he is capable of last week, He had to work hard to get to the front which softened him up. One of the most interesting runners in the competition is Distant Cara. She has only had two career starts and is pitched in the deep end here.

Sels 4-1-5
