Calne Racing Arc hopefuls Calco Flyer, Dedi Diddle Dum, Willy Whitesox and Taranis Bolt, all ran at Swindon on Wednesday night . . . . . and were all beaten.
The biggest shock was the defeat of last week’s 28.59 winner Dedi Diddle Dum (4-5f) who was chopped off at the first bend by Seiskin Raptor and was never able to regain momentum. The race eventually went to Ron Yeates’ black jacketed home bred Honest John (Kinloch Brae-Freedom Emma, May 13) in 28.95. Bog Brae was second.
The preceding heat looked altogether more competitive and the layers edged favouritism towards Calco Flyer (5-2f – T3). But it was Paul Sallis’ Embers Fury (T2) who made the bend in front and the favourite lost his chance when lumped into by Gowlane Puma (T1). It was left to Willy Whitesocks (T4) to make a race of it, and although he was wearing down the leader to the line, Paul Sallis’ brindle completed his hat-trick in 28.85. His previous winning time was 28.64 (+20).
The night’s other major race of interest was the clash between local favourite Jet Stream Bound and Kevin Hutton’s Memphis Mafia (4-7f) whose 41.74 in early February was one of three ‘fastest of year’ at different tracks. The layers reckoned class would out as so it proved. After a slick break, the blue jacketed Mafia soon dominated. Although he never looked likely to be caught, the game Bound (2-1) ran on well for second place, beaten a length and a half in 41.80, her 25th consecutive race in a tricast position.
Paul Sallis’ Swift Europe won the fastset of the three 509s (30.10). The others went to Droopys York (30.36) and Snaffi Jazz (30.93).
