After many years of leading around other trainer’s runners, Patrick Janssens sent out his first category one winner as Barricane Tiger (Razldazl Jayfkay-Dirt Bird, Dec 13) landed the Coral Sussex Cup.
The race is simply told, the brindle trapped a little quicker than usual, cross the sectional in 4.31, which was a spot slower than Oakfield Caesar but ten quicker than his semi final run. Crucially he had half a length to spare over Oscar Whisky (T1 1-2f) and seized the initiative at the first bend. The 8-1 chance, who stays a short six bends, was never going to be headed and came home two and a bit clear in 29.79 (N) for the 515m.
It was a popular success for the big Belgian, and for a training apprenticeship scheme which can be traced back through Linda Jones’ at Northaw experience in the 1960s, which was passed onto both champion trainer Mark Wallis and then onto Hockwold based Janssens, who was clearly emotional in his interview with SKY . . .
