2015 has been a cracking year for trainer Liam Dowling with Irish Derby and TV Trophy successes and it got better on Friday when his Anopheles – named after a type of mosquito – landed the Dublin Coach Juvenile Derby over 525 yards at Harolds Cross.
Trade Freddie led to the turn but was bumped out of the way by Black Alder and this caused a ripple effect for hose on his outside with Jaytee Dutch the 4-5 favourite badly impeded.
All this mayhem left Hee Haws Sheriff clear of Black Alder with Anopheles in third place. Down the back straight Anopheles closed and went second on the third turn before reeling in the leader close home to score by half a length in 28.84sec.
Anopheles was one of the youngest runners in the event being a March 2014 son of Droopys Scolari.
The favourite came from another parish to snatch third a short head back. He is likely to much better suited to a galloping venue like Shelbourne Park.
