Baby Bullet’s first race in England was a heat of the Puppy Derby. Her second (third, fourth, fifth and sixth were in A4 at Towcester.) Bought by Roger Flitney for a bargain £4,000 off the greyhound-data website, Baby Bullet landed the £5,000 Coral Coronation Cup in fine style on Friday night.
Following a moderate break she found herself trailing outsider Wentworth in the early stages but when proven stayer Burgess Elite hit the front after a circuit, the result was starting to look like a formaility.
But Bullet was having none of it as she stayed just behind the leader approaching the last two bends and nipped through on the rail off the last. It was nip and tuck to the winning line with the daughter of Jaytee Jet and Highview Picture getting home by a neck. Bullet completed a 139-1 four-timer. Her record for her last 13 races: 8 wins 5 seconds
It was last August when Roger Flitney bought Baby Bullet out of the Wallis kennel. By that stage, Baby had progressed onto open racing and had won at Romford and finished second in a bitch’s final at Hove. But ambitions were still compartively modest when she joined Henlow handler Jason Gornall.
Jason said: “Roger was looking for a decent top heat winner/minor open racer and she seemed to fit the bill. Mark told us that Towcester wasn’t her track, but I had seen she could shift and thought she looked good value for money. Not long after we got her she did 27.46 in top heat at Henlow.
“Even though she doesn’t need to lead, I thought we were up against it when she didn’t come away. I was glad we were inside the two who moved off a bit last week, but I did think she was up against it when the three hit the front. But she is a game little bitch and stuck to it.
“The plan now is for the Sussex Cup at Hove which we know she runs well. But eventually I would like to try her over a bit further because she seems to stay on well enough. But after what she has done already, she doesn’t owe us anything.”
