There is a wealth of 2023 whelps on the tracks now. We have taken a look over the last week of racing to find some who look worth following.
Carry On Daisy (Patrick Browne – Hove)
Droopys Sydney – Wishahowareyou, Mar 23
A repeat mating of a 2021 cross that produced four open race winners. She has had three starts so far, daubing a full bingo card of puppyish mistakes. She is only 16 months old and her four open race-winning siblings took seven, seven, four and three races to get off the mark. Once the penny drops, she is going to go through the grades from her current A9 position.
Crypto Wallet (John Mullins – Yarmouth)
Burgess Bucks – Smallmead, Feb 23
A much-anticipated litter out of the 2020 St Leger winner. Sent off odds on for an A6 on Monday evening, he was a close third. He moved off from three on his debut and after the four cleared him on Monday, he shifted slightly right again so a wider starting position could help him in the short term. Looks to have inherited his dam’s stamina so when he times his break right, he won’t be coming back.
Hazelgrove Flash (Mark Lyons – Kinsley)
Skywalker Barry – Killenaulerocket, Feb 23
The first offspring to hit the track of 2020 Juvenile Derby winner Skywalker Barry. Her dam is a half-sister to crack stayers Billys Diva and Kishlawn Shakira so 268m around Kinsley is not going to be the end game for this bitch. She shaped well on her second start on Sunday. After missing the kick, she paced well to the bend before being chopped off by the winner. A D5 should be hers for the taking before stepping up in distance.
Redbrick Langley (Jimmy Gaskin – Doncaster)
Droopys Addition – Ballymac Lydia, Jan 23
A winner on Sunday night in a D4, she gave them a couple of lengths out the traps but paced to the lead by the time they got to the bend. Her litter sister Redbrick Luna won D2 on Saturday, looking like a talented litter. Their dam was a multiple open race winner over both four and six bends so will do better when trying further.
Sharp Royd (Vincent Lund – Pelaw Grange)
Magical Bale – Battle Cry, Mar 23
Has been sent off favourite in both A6 starts so far. Went close on his debut but found all the trouble going on his second outing which came at the weekend. Went into the opening bend about two lengths down but exited the second bend seven lengths behind. Did well to close the winner down to just over four at the line. The return to a wider draw will be beneficial.
