The British Bred Derby gets underway at Sheffield this evening with six first round heats.  The category one event with a winners prize of £10,000 is always a competition which attracts most of the leading British Bred greyhounds in training and this year is no different. 

As is usually the case in recent times and justifiably so based upon the kennels record Liz McNair and the KSS team are well represented at the head of the ante post betting with King Capaldi available at between 3/1 – 4/1 and kennel mate Queen Joni at between 4/1 – 5/1.

Capaldi is yet to taste category one success but it’s easy to see why he heads the betting outright having already reached the final of the Produce Stakes at Swindon in September and only narrowly touched off in the final of the Puppy Derby at Towcester a few weeks ago behind litter brother King Memphis.  Joni meanwhile already has category one success on her CV having ran out a super winner of the aforementioned Produce Stakes at Swindon having set a new track record around the venue in her semi final.

There is strength in depth in this competition though and it’s not just about one kennel.  Tom Heilbron has enjoyed his best year yet in the sport of that there is no doubt and he is doubly represented by Fearsome Enigma and Fearsome Quest available at best prices of 25/1 and 28/1 respectively.  Tom share’s his thoughts on the pair here –
