1987 September 25 GRA’s Harringay stadium closes, some 60 years and 12 days after its first meeting. It is Oaks Final night, won by Lucky Empress. A huge crowd turn out to pay their last respects and punters then take home various fixtures and fittings as mementos. The 19 acre site is acquired by the local council and McAlpine Homes. Following various planning appeals, the stadium is demolished and makes way for a Sainsburys Superstore plus 220 homes and flats Harringay is the last of the GRA’s original London tracks. It was the northern outpost with White City in the west, Stamford Bridge and New Cross in the south and West Ham in East London.
