Nottingham Opens – Fenwick , Boon & Lynas Share Their Thoughts

Nottingham’s Colwick Park stadium see’s 4 open races staged this evening and Newcastle based Jimmy Fenwick will be hoping he’s making another successful raid on a venue he’s always supported strongly over the years.  Represented by January 2021 puppy Lightfoot Clark in the 659pm and Coppice Psyche in the 821pm Jimmy told me “Clark would definitely be the best chance of my pair tonight and with something like a start he should go very close to winning this.  He looks to have a decent enough draw on the rail as it looks as if Alec Stone’s runner in two will be moving off a little.  Our lad maybe just lacks a slight bit of early but if we can just keep handy enough to halfway he’ll be finishing strongly as one thing he does do is stay on well.  He shouldn’t be far off here and like I say I fancy him to go well.  The bitch later on Coppice Psyche I’ve seeded her rails and she’s got trap 1 but she’s one that wouldn’t want that tight to the rail ideally she’d want trap 2 or 3.  What can you do though ?  Seed middle and you end up in 5 or 6 and that would be far from good for her either.  You only have to look at the dogs drawn to her outside in 2 and 3 tonight , both 35 or 36 kilo dogs who would be wanting similar ground to herself.  Does a bitch like Psyche want to be drawn outside them ?  I’ll be looking to step her up in trip soon enough she definitely wants further and looks as if she might stay but I’ll try and take in a 500m event first and then likely look towards a 630m open at Monmore which is a decent trip to start over before making any firm decisions”.

Kevin Boon is also doubly represented on tonight’s card with brother and sister pairing Farneys Select in the earlier mentioned Puppy affair at 659pm and Farneys Trend in the Winner Of One 480m race at 821pm.  Kevin told me “I like both these pups but for different reasons they’re definitely both going to be better for a little more time.  Select came to me from Ireland so green and she’s a lot of learning to do even now but given time I think she’ll make into a nice stayer.  I’m searching for a new Sheldan and this bitch could be her but only time will tell.  I put her in the Oaks at Perry Barr as a bit of a wildcard entry really thinking she might qualify a round or two with her running on style and she got the second round before being eliminated.  She pleased me though she’s a real nice attitude and despite hitting trouble in races so far the really pleasing thing is she doesn’t give up and gets herself quickly back into stride.  This is another step on the ladder she should go well but she’s definitely going to be better for both more experience and eventually for a step up in trip.  Her brother runs later on the card and he’s more forward but he’s been a challenge as he’s been cramping in his races.  I’ve no doubts he’ll lead tonight so long as he comes away and he could well lead a fair way.  He’s been showing huge pace against some good dogs but has been tightening up in the latter stages.  I’ve been trying different things with his training and through his feed so let’s hope we see him coming home a little better.  It’s difficult to recommend a bet as you just don’t know but if he could just sort out that finishing I know he’s got a big run in him”.

Jill Sutherst meanwhile is another who is doubly represented on tonight’s card and Jill and her partner and assistant trainer Glen Lynas travel down from their North East base with 2 runners who both compete in the Sprint Trophy Final at 751pm.  Glen told me “It’s a very tight final this and not one dog really stands out.  Any of them could win it but I know for sure I’d not swap my two and I’m confident of a big showing from them.  I couldn’t have them any better they’re both in great shape.  On paper my pup in trap 5 Witton Survivor would appear to have the better chance and he did get his trapping together last time.  He’s only lightly raced but is proving to be a real win machine and now he’s got to grips with the traps at Nottingham it would be no surprise to see him flash out and put in a big run.  Don’t rule out my dog in trap 1 though Definitive Force.  He’s going to be a big price and after walking out last week and hitting trouble at that tricky bend he ran a good race in defeat.  I’ve got that dog spot on for tonight and if we can find a break from him I think he’ll represent huge odds.  I’d not really be worried which of the two came out on top though , I’m looking forward to the race”.
