One of the leading young prospects in Ireland , Kildare trained by Peter Cronin and owned by Aidan Comerford is to target the Star Sports English Derby at Towcester.  Kildare was the subject of an ante post gamble to land the recent Con and Annie Kirby Memorial at Limerick and though heading into the competition unraced nearly landed odds of 100/1 down for his supporters.  Finishing third in the final after superb quarter and semi final successes his final run was a much stronger performance and it has tempted his sporting owner to take a shot at landing the Derby over here.  Aidan Comerford told me “We’ve been contemplating what to do for the best but have decided upon having a go.  Pace wise I’ve no doubt he’s good enough to live with some of the fastest around.  Indeed if he were to go around Limerick in a solo next week I’d be sure he’d hit close to 28 dead.  His lack of experience is obviously a little concern heading into a competition like the Derby but he’s a sensible dog and despite his lack of racing he’ll be 2 years old in July.  We were held up a bit in our preparation for the Kirby but he’s coming on with every run now.  He’ll trial at Towcester over the coming weekend and all being well it will then be all systems go”.

Irish Derby Champion and superstar of the sport Susie Sapphire made her return to the track in a 525yrd open at Shelbourne on Saturday nights The Suncroft Festival Puppy Oaks Final card.  Not quite as quickly into stride as she usually is Susie then encountered crowding heading into the third bend and dropped away to finish a well enough beaten last.  Aidan told me “Susie has checked out fine , she’s always been a bitch who needs to be kept right up to her work and busy to show her best form.  It wasn’t to be on Saturday but the run will bring her on no end”.

Exciting times for the Comerford family and pleasing to see one of Ireland’s top youngsters looks to be heading to Towcester to showcase his talents to supporters of the sport here in the UK.
