GBGB CEO Mark Bird has responded to the letter from Mark Pierrepont regarding the planned annual awards ceremony. He writes:

“We are excited to be hosting our annual Greyhound of the Year Awards in person this year having had to hold them virtually in 2021. Originally, because of the Covid pandemic, we were going to stage them virtually again this year, however we listened to what the greyhound community wanted, plus with a drop off in infections, we changed our decision to hold the Awards as a live event once more. This is our annual opportunity for our sport to come together and suitably celebrate the successes and achievements of the past year and we aim for it to be a glitzy, memorable evening. That being said, we are aware of the concerns around the costs this year and will be listening to the feedback we have received.

“We have had to regrettably increase our ticket price this year which is already heavily subsidised thanks to supportive sponsorship. We know that historically trainers or owners sometimes pay for their staff to attend the evening to thank them, however, if any kennelhand wishes to buy a ticket directly, they are welcome to pay in instalments should this help spread the cost. Please speak to our staff when booking the ticket.

“Following negotiations, the venue will also be offering discounted room rates for those who wish to stay at the hotel. There are also other cheaper accommodation options within a short distance of the venue should anyone wish to book alternative accommodation nearby.

“Once this year’s awards are over and we start to look ahead to next year’s ceremony, we will welcome suggestions from the greyhound community as to the location of the awards. We are open to suggestions regarding venue and to moving the event outside of London, however, the venue must be large enough to host the event, have suitable accommodation and good transport links.”
