Angela Harrison’s April 2020 whelp Droopys Biggy posted a joint fastest of the first round 2854 in winning heat 4 of the ARC Northern Puppy Derby on Tuesday evening at Newcastle. Despite encountering trouble around the second turn he was soon going well heading down the back straight and once taking command by halfway he soon began to open up and pulled further clear with each passing stride. The eventual winning distance being 9 3/4 lengths. He’ll face tougher opposition as the competition progresses but it was an impressive start in the competition for Harrison’s locally trained star.
Jason Gray’s Nottingham raider Mickys Barrett was quickly into stride and led all the way to take heat 1 in 2855 by a neck from Tom Heilbron’s Freedom Alibi. Liz McNair’s antepost favourite Havana Bale Out suffered much trouble around the opening two bends but eventually qualified comfortably enough in third place.
Stuart Ray’s locally trained Blackhouse Harry took the sixth and final heat of the night in 2854 equalling the time of Droopys Biggy earlier on the card. It was an impressive run from the August 2020 youngster who looks to have an exciting future.
Other heat winners were Good Vienna for Brian Fairbairn took heat 2 in 28.90 , Coppice Ice took heat 3 for Jimmy Fenwick in 2904 whilst Fourbet Layla took heat 5 in 28.82 for Tom Heilbron.
