Zascandil gave an exhibition of track craft to land the 2020 Coral Regency for Norfolk trainer Kevin Boon at Hove on Saturday night. The 7-2 chance ran from trap two. . .
Owner and trainer Kevin Boon said: “He is such a clever dog and so calm about the place; probably the calmest I have had since Murrys Act. I brought Zascandil (a Spanish word meaning ‘swindler’ or ‘wrong un’) from Pat Buckley after seeing him win a race at Limerick. He has badly hampered and about 20 yards off the pace, but still got up to win. His staying potential was obvious.
“I started running him over four bends at Towcester because there weren’t any open races being run, and we ran him from traps five and six. I have seeded him middle so far, but I will be putting a ‘W’ back on him, not because he is a true wide runner, but because he breaks better from the outside and we keep getting inside draws. He can really run from any trap.
“He clocked 41.27 at Hove back in March and I thought he was capable of breaking 41.00. In time, he may stay a marathon. I know he was picked up by Antigua Fire in the semi finals, but it was a heavy track and he is only a 31 kilo dog. On faster going, I think he will get it.”
Despite only having six racing dogs, the Norfolk trainer landed a double on the big night with Sheldan’s half sister Three Ems.
Kevin said: “She was only one day out of puppy status and I thought I might be criticised if she didn’t stay the 945 metres. But she ran well.”
Sheldan trialled back at Monmore on Friday clocking 28.21 for the 480 metres and will be returning to defend her Ladbrokes Summer Stayers title.
Kevin said: “She was beaten at Hove last time out but what most people don’t realise is that she was spiked twice. We kept her off for three weeks and clearly there isn’t a lot wrong with her now. I will be taking her for the stayers race and Bockos Boss for the Gold Cup.”
