The lids lifted and the six dog final of the 62nd Yarmouth Championships got under way at Yarmouth Stadium. A very competitive challenge for the early pace as the hounds run into the first turn with trap 4 Sophies Sparkle pacing her paws down the back straight and into final turn where trap 2 Jakes Magic stunned racegoers with his turn of foot taking the field in the home straight where it mattered running Sophie’s Sparkle to 2nd place by 2 lengths recording a time of 27.87.
Trained locally in Ormesby by Erica Samuels, Jakes Magic went off at 5/2 second favourite, but you could get the better price of 11/4 with on course bookmakers giving Boxing Day racegoers more for their money.
‘I purchased Jakes Magic as a 4 month old puppy from Ireland along with his brother. Having reared him along, he then went to schooling at Nick Savva’s Kennel’s in March for few weeks and then started grading. He was entered in the East Anglian derby this year, but just didn’t quite happen for him. This event has seen him scrape through but has found his running shoes when it matters here in the final. This win is very special for the kennels and myself, as his racing name is after two of the dogs which retired at our kennels, so it’s a great reminder; Explained head kennel hand Chloe Fairman.
Yarmouth Stadium’s boxing day special also held the traditional veteran’s race which is sponsored by Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders, with the first of the races won by Irene Barnard’s trap 4 runner Move over Louie. The second Yarmouth Homefinders veteran race was won by Marcus The Joker trained by Ricky Thom.
