The top five handlers in the Trainers Championship have runners in tomorrow night’s Ladbrokes Golden Jacket semi finals.
No one is more heavily represented than Mark Wallis with five runners, which is also the number of points he is now trailing his former assistant trainer and good friend, Patrick Janssens.
Patrick knows that his time at the top seems limited, though it doesn’t concern him.
He said: “I don’t have the numbers to compete with some of the bigger kennels, but I am perfectly happy operating in the way that I do.
“I have capacity for 19-20 races of which 12-14 are open racers. We can manage that many and still enjoy it. I have actually turned eleven dogs away in the last week.”
Looking further ahead, Patrick hopes to hold his own in the forthcoming GAIN Trainers Championship.
He said: “I am a bit short in the standard distances department so I might have to use Affleck Bolt over four bends.
“Although Barricane Tiger is getting on, he is still running well and should score points. Bockos Alfie needs to lead but has a near 50% strike rate. Seaglass Sanman is another option. I intended to run him in the Gold Cup at Henlow but he picked up a cough.
“For the sprint, we recently retired Walkthetalk but I have an able replacement in Kilmore Lemon, who just might be the fastest dog I have put a lead on. He will be going in the Golden Sprint first.
“We have good stayers, including Goldies Hotspur and possibly Slick Strauss or Affeck Lady.
“I have Move Over Eliza for the bitch’s race. She is coming back from season and should come on over the next few weeks.
“There are various puppies including Slick Sphinx who ran very well at Romford on Friday and is being targeted at the Essex Vase. Alternatively Seaglass Caesar and Seaglass Sparky who are two young dogs I expect to see coming on in the next few weeks.”
