The Ladbrokes Gold Cup and Summer Stayers Classic both received their full entries for Saturday’s opening round, though it was the six bend event which attracted the lion’s share.
Monmore Racing Manager Tony Williamson said: “The Gold Cup was spot on with the 36, but the Stayers Classic was inundated with 62 entries.”
Of all the 72 competing on the night, Tony admits that he will have a particular interest in one dog above all others.
He said: “I am so chuffed to see Churchfield Syd back here. He was so impressive until he was badly injured leading the Puppy Derby semi final. They have nursed him back to fitness and he looks as good as ever.”
