Former A5 grader Zulu Baran (6-1) caused an upset in the final of the Coral Stayers Stakes. His trainer Claude Gardiner was expected to win the race with the hot 4-7 shot Droopys Flash but he couldn’t get competitive when missing his break.
Instead his kennelmate Zulu Baran was off to a flyer and was soon five lengths clear. The field never looked like getting to him and it was left to Mark Wallis’s Ferryforth Fran to run on for second, four lengths behind the winner who clocked 41.87 (-30) for the 695m.
Wallis had better luck with Domino Storm and Calco Flyer who both impressed in the Sussex Cup Trial Stakes over 515 metres.
The Derby Plate winner Domino Storm flew out and made all to slam Jet Stream Sound in 29.79sec (-20), the fastest time recorded by a bitch since changes were made to the Hove timing system.
Calco Flyer was soon clear in the last division to come home just over two lengths clear of Ballymac Manix in 29.80sec.
My Real Mutley, second in the Derby Plate, landed another division of the Trial stake when leading all the way to hold Tadys Robin in 30.09sec. Jet Stream Smurf landed his 12th open race at Hove in Division L. Kevin Hutton’s runner was first into his stride and he saw off View The moon by three and a half in 29.95.
Underground Ace went quickest in the Coral July Maiden Trophy heats. Paul Young’s runner came through strongly to lead at halfway and beat kennelmate Droopys Dart by just over six lengths in 30.22sec.
Getgoin Molly slipped her field in the second qualifier and held off the late surge of Barnish Panther by three quarters in 30.37sec.
