BRESBET is first from the traps in pricing up the next major competition in Ireland with the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial 2022 kicking off at Limerick on Saturday.
Following the Sheffield firm’s support of the BresBet Easter Cup, which concluded at Shelbourne Park on Saturday with an historic winner in the shape of superstar Susie Sapphire, attention has now turned to the prestigious Kirby Memorial.
The world’s richest juvenile greyhound competition has been hosted at Limerick Greyhound Stadium since its inception in 2013 and is sponsored by Noreen and JP McManus in honour of Noreen’s parents, Con and Annie Kirby.
The event boasts the biggest prize-fund in Ireland after the Irish Greyhound Derby with a total prize-fund of €150,000.
Limerick GAA clubs also get a share of the event fund with each of the 78 greyhounds in the event assigned to a GAA, LGFC, ladies camogie or handball club. The winning greyhound’s assigned club wins a nominator prize of €10,000 and a free benefit night at Limerick Greyhound Stadium.
The Con & Annie Kirby Memorial 2022 stretches over five weeks beginning on Saturday, March 26, with the final live on Friday, April 22, live on Sporty Stuff TV/RPGTV.
Noreen McManus was honoured at the National Greyhound Racing Awards recently with a Special Merit award for her support of greyhound racing in Limerick.
Commenting on the event, Carl Perry, BresBet’s head of trading, said: “In a relatively short space of time, the Kirby Memorial has become the major juvenile race in Ireland and is testament to the support of Noreen and JP McManus.
“The event’s roll of honour is absolutely top drawer and has produced champion after champion, many of whom have gone on to major success in the Classics in both Ireland and the UK.
“By its very nature, being for young greyhounds with not too many formlines to work off, pricing up is not easy – but the Easter Cup proved very popular for us and we’d like to keep that momentum in Ireland going!
“That said, the Kirby Memorial will be keenly watched by greyhound fans and enthusiasts on both sides of the Irish Sea and should again be another top-class competition.”
