Towcester are upping their prize money as they prepare for their first BAGS fixture on Good Friday.

Racing manager Chris Page said: “It was £10 for all runners meaning the minimum will be £30 rising to £40 for the better grades.

“It is always under review and of course we become eligible for GBGB prize money grants in December which will be an extra £5 per runner.

“At this stage, I would like to have another 100 greyhounds available. Some of those will come internally from our current trainers though hopefully we can attract a few more too.

“Overall, we are very pleased with how things are going. We had our biggest crowd since opening night on Saturday, though I don’t suppose we are the only ones. It has a lot to do with pay day and people having paid off their Christmas debts.”

On the racing side, the RM was hugely impressed with Kevin Hutton’s Face The Blade (Blackstone Gene-Vigilant Amy, Apr 13) who won a maiden open at the track on Sunday.

The lightly raced ex-Irish runner clocked 28.08 for the 480 metres including a 3.94 sectional.

Page said: “That must be one of the fastest sectionals we have seen. He was away and gone and looks a very decent dog.”

The blue was eight spots faster than Mark Wallis’ Derby hopeful Blonde Nipper who took his unbeaten tally to two.

Page said: “He ran very well though I am not sure he is a Wimbledon type. Although he has good early, he was only about fifth away and didn’t lead until going into the first bend.

“Obviously he is young and improving but he will definitely need to come away better at Wimbledon in my opinion.”
