Farloe Quest was a popular local winner of the Pinpoint Recruitment Maiden Derby Final over 480 metres at Newcastle writes Jason Craddock

Kelly Macari’s runner, a 9-2 chance, flew out of the boxes and led around the opening turn from Musical Storm.

Pat Rosney’s bitch tried to close but in the end Farloe Quest had a length in hand of Musical Storm in 28.67sec.

Macari said afterwards: “It was a great start to the year, fantastic.

“Alan Findlay of Pinpoint owns a share in the dog and it’s worked out well for him, as he’s sponsored this race and several of the other races and will really enjoy the night.”

Walshes Hill was impressive in the Pinpoint Junior Football League Sprint over 290 metres.

Jimmy Wright’s 4-7 shot was soon well clear and came home six lengths clear of Offtoaflyer in 17.08sec.

Whatareaction left trouble behind to land the SR Transport Maiden Puppy Stake over 480 metres.

Steven Atkinson’s runner trapped to the front and was clear by the turn. His cause was helped by severe trouble which saw Calzaghe Peppe and Bull Fort on the floor.

The son of Scolari Me Daddy, a 4-1 chance, came home eight lengths clear of El Mondeo in 29.28sec.

Atkinson said: “He’s only young being an August 13 pup and that was a great debut.”

Glideaway Star was a shock 6-1 winner of the Unipress Standard over 480 metres.

Julie Bateson was out with the washing early on as Bua Farrah cut out the running from the disappointing favourite Likeitalot.

However Glideaway Star came flying on the outside to get up close home and score by two lengths in 28.80sec.

Bateson said: “This is his fifth race for me. The dog has no luck previously but he’s trialled well here and did it well in the end.”

Market leaders Pond Beethoven and Eric Court looked to have the Winning Lines British Bred Standard at their mercy when well clear.

However Eric Court hit the back of the leader at the third turn and ended both their chances. It was left to 10-1 shot Scotswood Road to come through and in 29.02sec.

Winning trainer Harry Williams said: “The front two were obviously unlucky but this fellow was going strongly and wouldn’t have far away without the trouble.”

Ascot Woodie landed the MJK Sports Event Maiden Invitation over 480 metres.

Pat Rosney’s runner led to the turn but got shuffled back. He came again to beat Tarmons Jet by a length and a quarter in 29.59sec.

Rosney said: “He’s got some compensation for getting knocked out of the Maiden Derby as he was running well without getting any luck.”

Blackhouse Heidi was a facile winner of the Total Recycling Services 640. Harry Williams’ bitch led from start to finish beating Fares Please by five lengths in 39.08sec.

Williams said “When she led it was all over as she is the track record holder here over 670 metres. When she breaks down she will be mated.”

Sidarian Blitz came late to land the Total Recycling Services 480.

Heather Dimmock’s runner was led to the last turn by Sneezys Balboa but ran on well to eventually beat Ballymac Iago by a length and three quarters in 28.58sec.

“He ran well at Hall Green last week, which was his first run for a month and had the best of the going tonight to win this.”

Sandyhill Hitman got quotes of 100-1 to in the English Derby after his victory in the Pinpoint Healthcare Invitation over 480 metres.

Jimmy Fenwick’s runner was led to the turn by Maum Legend but went past and went on to hold the renewed challenge of the favourite by a short head in 28.78sec.

Fenwick said: “I’ve had him since a pup and he’s been in good form lately and had a great draw as the only railer.

“If he is in the same form I will take him to the Scottish Derby in the spring.”

Cashen Maureen had her first race for new connections in the Total Recycling Services Bitches race over 480 metres.

June McCombe’s runner led from the first turn but was challenged down the back straight by Flandys First. However she went on to beat that rival in 28.67sec.

McCombe said: “She didn’t come away and did well to say the rails aren’t running that great.

“I’ll try and keep her to the bitches’ races for as long as I can but the lads want to run her in the Derby.”
