There are ‘Cat 1’ winners littered throughout Saturday’s William Hill Classic and Grand Prix first rounds at Sunderland.

The Classic entry is headed by defending champion Roxholme Scolari, well on his way to his fourth birthday but with only 15 UK races on his card.

Peter Cronin’s Betfred Gymcrack winner Cometwopass who will be accompanied across the Irish Sea by Robert Gleeson’s Toolmaker Obama and Rachel Wheeler’s Moanteen Whiskas. The four bend field includes several with points to prove from Kinsley including runner-up Barricane Jack and fancied casualties of earlier round including Farloe Thor.

The Grand Prix is arguably even more competitive with an entry headed by the multi Cat 1 winning littermates Rubys Rascal and Rubys Razzle.

Their opposition includes the Geordie favourite Shellam Delano, last year’s runner-up Mustang Golden, beaten Leger favourite Cloran Paddy, Pelaw record breaker Katies Vixen, the ever improving Thinkingofdarcy and the untapped potential that comes via Cuba Libre and Barricane Tommy. Throw in the likes of Calzaghe Jan, Geelo Bullet and Acomb Ruby and its. . . . well, just one hell of a competition.
