Julie Bateson’s Glideaway Star will miss next month’s RPGTV Scottish Derby, but the good news is that he should be back in action in the summer.

The dog, who was looking to complete a hat-trick of victories in the final of the Conlon Family Building Company 480 final at Newcastle on Saturday, came off lame after hitting trouble at the second turn and at first his trainer feared that the dog’s career was over, but vet Mike Gilliard examined him on Monday and his diagnosis was much more favourable.

Julie says: “When I got to him at the pick-up I knew that there was something wrong and then first thoughts were that he had seriously damaged his accessory carpal on his left fore and that is the sort of injury that they don’t normally come back from.

“However, I took him to Mike and he X-rayed him and the pictures revealed that it was only a hairline fracture and, while he will have to miss the Scottish Derby which I was looking forward to as I thought the track would suit him, he should be back in three months and, hopefully, as good as ever.”
