In unveiling details of their new welfare initiative, the Sheffield management are guaranteeing any shortfall for a total bill that could reach a quarter of a million pounds.

The track acted swiftly last year when the first BAGS streaming cheque arrived, immediately implementing a prize money increase. The second phase, how to best spend the cash specifically ring-fenced for welfare, has taken longer in the planning.

Last week they joined a (short) list of tracks offering to pay for the patching up, kennelling and re-homing of any greyhound suffering a career ending break or fracture at the stadium.

Stadium director John Gilburn said: “The overall estimate, including the prize money increase, comes out at around £250,000, including probably £30-£40,000 additional spend by the stadium. In fact, while we await the latest cheque from BAGS, we are actually funding the whole thing.”
