Local runner Lightfoot Oscar and trainer Russ Warren dominated the two ‘Holmes’ competitions at Sheffield on Tuesday.

Lightfoot Oscar (Candelight King-Puma Girl, Apr 16) made it six open race wins from a career of seven races with a 28.99 (-40) victory in the 500m Ryan Holmes Puppy Cup. Drawn blue, Sean Davy’s 8-11f beat Mustang Thrill (T6 5-1) by just over eight lengths in 28.99. Porthouse Blue (T3 8-1) finished third.

The other qualifier went to Thrill’s kennelmate and 4-5f Droopys Zephyr (Romeo Recruit-Droopys Quinta, Apr 16) with a 29.42 victory over Lostrigg Charlie (T4 9-2) Angela Harrison’s winner went from trap five with Hannekes Man (T1 2-1).

 

The in-form Shale Carter (Droopys Sydney-Shale Sally, Jul 15) who beat Droopys Live in his previous two outings, clocked the fastest 500m run of the night when winning the opening heat of the Harry Holmes Memorial. Russ Warren’s 5-1 shot ran from white and clocked 28.86 (-40). He would be followed home by Dorotas Vic (T5 11-10f) who would be beaten a length and a half.

Heat two of the same event went to kennelmate Swift Bosch (Kinloch Brae-Zaras Princess, Jul 15) (T2 6-1) who beat Cappoquin Jack (T3 7-4) by a length in 29.18 (-40).

The third qualifier went to another member of the Warren range, Swift Clancy (Kinloch Brae-Swift Tequila, Sep 15) (T3 7-4f) who beat Swithins Beans by a length and a quarter in 29.04 (-40). The Warren Holmes treble returned at 114-1.

Possibly the run of the night though came from Geelo Zip (Ballymac Eske-Emers Ivy, Aug 15) with a 27.73 (-40) run for the 480m. (Candlelight Fire’s track record is 27.32.)
