Young Princess was a shock 12-1 winner of the Coral Romford Puppy Derby Final over 400 metres on Friday.
Paul Young’s daughter of Droopys Jet flew out of the traps, while the favourite Badminton Donal missed the kick. Young Princess led up from Make No Apologie, who took a heft bump at the opening turn.
Blue Tick George nipped inside the trouble, which also involved the well fancied Droopys Carat, and was three lengths adrift of the leader at halfway.
Meanwhile Droopys Carat started to improve from the penultimate turn and came with a wet sail up the inside but failed by half a length to catch the leader.
Young Princes is owned by The Young At Heart Syndicate, headed by Jack Murrell. He said afterwards: “It is great to win a Category One race at our local track.
“We got her from the Sean and Michael Dunphy and the team at Paul Young’s kennels have done a fantastic job and this win is well deserved.”
Young has a history of providing shock winners of this event as his Droopys Survivor won at 50-1 in 2001. He also won the race with Droopys Brindle in 2015.
