2004 Premier Fantasy takes 19 spots off Shelbourne’s 525 clock when landing the Easter Cup Final. The 28.08 run is a new national record.

1956 Cork Greyhound Stadium have installed an independent electric timing system. The device is located beside the press box, so the general public can see the times recorded for themselves, rather than wait for official public address announcements. It is the first such system devised in Ireland or Britain.

1997 Stow stewards have Nick Savva on the carpet again after one of his youngsters Toms The Best 2finds 55 spots in a graded puppy event. His name is Toms The Best (left- Steve Nash pic).

1994 With the New East Stand not even completed, problems are arising at Hackney. Builders Walstone are in financial difficulties and the promoters Fleetfoot Racing announce a string of staff redundancies and prize money cuts.

1980 Shelbourne and Limerick Sales both report a £4,000 top lot at their sales. The Dublin runner was Earlville Choice who went on to contest a couple of NGRC open race finals. The Limerick sale was the appropriately named Limerick Echo (Kybo Venture Skipping Chick) who had been injured in the previous year’s Irish Derby and was being sold as a stud dog. He died shortly after being exported to the USA.

1976 Romford stewards call an enquiry after two dogs had run in the wrong race. Oulartwick Pam and Kybos Coming both due to contest the fifth race, but contested the third race and finished first and second. All payouts were made before the error was spotted. Trainers Peter Payne and Dave Oswald were each fined £25, the Romford management were fined £100.

1980 There was a tremendous final in the Kennedy Cup at Limerick. It went to Michael Browne’s Burnpark Sally (You Genius-Burnpark Lass). The previous year’s Irish Oaks winner, beat Shanagarry Duke by a length and a half in 29.37.

1993 35 people were arrested at Oxford Stadium following a fight after the meeting.

1971 the NGRS has raised Walthamstow’s annual 700 yard race the Grand Prix, to Classic status. It brings the number of classics to nine, the others are Derby, Oaks, St Leger, Laurels, Gold Collar, Scurry Gold Cup, Cesarewitch and the Grand National.

1970 Spectre Jockey (Spectre-Jockeys Dream, Oct 68) fetches top lot at Limerick Sales despite not having trialled. Jockey is sold for 1,250 guineas on the form of two races at the track. He is sent to England where he wins the 1971 Evening Standard Stakes and All England Cup. He also finished runner-up in the Gold Collar and St Leger and broke the Crayford 500 yard track record.

1993 Stainforth open for business but soon experience problems when they are unable to attract enough trainers for their permit fixtures.

1985 There is a big turn-up in the Harry Corry Spring Cup at Dunmore. It had looked to be a three way battle between the Francie Murray trained trio Curryhills Brute, Wise Band and Curryhills Fox. But all three finished in the shade of the McKenna trained Gastrognome who clocked 23.59 for the 435 yds.

1997 Henlow is closed by promoter Jock McNaughton. Landlord Tony McDonnell announces he will challenge McNaughton’s tenancy claim and that racing will resume.

1955 Wembley cause a storm of protest by raising the kennel bills from 28 shillings (£1.40) to 35 shillings (£1.75 a week) an increase of 20% (equivalent in 2016 of around £43). Among the irate owners are George Flintham, one of the richest owners around at the time. He asks the Wembley management to increase prize money accordingly.

1972 The National Sporting League has advised all its members to withhold all payments on the “Quinela” at Hendon, when the dual forecast treble paid £452.84p to a 5p unit to a single winner (9,044-1). General manager, Ronnie Payne stated that his officials were satisfied that the betting on the Quinela was, “conducted in a perfectly correct manner”. But the fact remained that there were 45 tickets going on to the third and final leg, and only 27 were struck on the 15 possible combinations. Off course betting on this bet was very popular with punters, for an outlay of £1.35p, they could pick 3 greyhounds per leg, any 2 from 3 either way round to count. Eventually the four major bookmakers stopped taking the bet.
