Petplan pledges donation to help Barley Greyhound Sanctuary

The sanctuary finds loving homes to retired racing greyhounds

Petplan has awarded the £1000 charity cheque for January 2021 to the Barley Greyhound Sanctuary in Essex.

Every month, Petplan selects one of its animal charity partners at random to receive a £1000 donation to put towards helping the animals in their care, and this month, that cheque is going towards the daily cost of vet bills and overall care for retired greyhounds who have been used for racing.

When greyhounds arrive at the sanctuary, the team will assess, neuter and care for them until a suitable home is found.

Barley is also a lifelong sanctuary for any greyhounds that can’t be homed for any reason.

Joy Battley, manager of the Barley Greyhound Sanctuary said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the money because the last year has been extremely difficult for us due to Covid-19. We haven’t been able to attend our usual fundraising events so this donation is very gratefully received to help us continue the work that we do.”

Petplan’s head of marketing, Isabella von Mesterhazy, said: “Congratulations to the Barley Greyhound Sanctuary in Essex.

“We are very proud to help a centre that does fantastic work helping those possibly forgotten animals on a daily basis to ensure they have a comfortable life after retiring. Joy and her team are fully deserving of this help and we are only too happy to oblige.

“As the UK’s No.1 pet insurance provider we work with over 1,200 animal charities and understand the challenges animal welfare organisations face. As such we provide four weeks free pet insurance to anyone rehoming a pet from one of our animal charities.”

She added: “Pet insurance can help pet owners cover the cost of unexpected veterinary treatment and provides reassurance for adopters during those precious first weeks while their adopted pet settles into its new home. Insuring your pet is an important part of taking care of its future health.”
