Star Sports Bookmakers is looking at the possibility of giving Wales its first licensed greyhound track in over 40 years.

The independent track at Ystrad Mynach, known as the Valley is the last surviving track in Wales and there were rumours of it closing.

Star Sports’ Ben Keith read about its plight and is looking at getting involved to transform the Newport venue and race under rules.

Wales’ last licenced track was Cardiff Arms Park, which closed in 1977.

Plans are in their infancy but new kennels and a new restaurant and bringing the Welsh Derby, last won by Instant Gambler, would be the priorities.

Keith said: “Greyhound racing is a real passion of mine and Star Sports and we will do everything we can to keep it going in Wales.

“With help from Valley Stadium, we are looking at all avenues in order to protect the wonderful sport and give it the long-term future everybody involved wants and deserves.”
