Mildenhall may have lacked quantity, but they certainly didn’t lack quality in June writes Mark Newberry.
The recently reported influx of new dogs have quickly settled in at this tricky venue and putting the regulars firmly in the place. Whilst the new recruits have boosted the graded strength numbers are still low with very few left unraced on the once per week card.
Best of the bunch so far is the Barry Huddlestone owned and Derek Brighton trained Monagea Express this Sept 13 son of Express Ego x Millroad Tara was brought after winning twice at Belle Vue (A7 & A5) then winning for the third time on collection day in a fair A3.
His first outing at the Hall was in the top grade A4 and after blasting from the traps he ran out a strong winner in the fastest of the year 23.09 (+20) and taking his career record to 4 from 6 as he now heads off on the maiden open race scene.
The aptly named Fairweather Pal who was runner up Mongea Express is another shrewdly brought purchase from the most recent Henlow sales for Miss C Snare and trained by Robert Pendall, this Oct 13 whelp by Scolari Me Daddy x Terrors Advocate franked the form by landing his next 2 top grade A4 events recording a best of 23.58 and looks another with a bright future especially as connections consider a step up in trip.
Sticking with the Henlow sales recruits, two other well brought youngsters have also got off the mark with the David Prentice owned and trained Somersham Pixie using her blistering early to land an A5 in 23.44 (+25) with Julia Bristows Parkhill Goldie winning at the first time of asking in a tricky A5 coming from last to first in 23.71 and very much looking like a stayer.
Another new recruit to be forging a name for himself is the M Wright owned and Patrick Jansens trained Bolton Steel who made short work of a top grade A4 in 23.67. This Nov 12 whelp has good A3 form from Shelbourne Park landed a nice touch for connections.
Of the locals Colin Finch has been in great form landing a recent well backed double with his Fat Controller and Veloz Cool landing A5 and A6 events.
The June OBS £500 A6 final was won by the Julie Pearson owned and trained Oakgrove Tinks the 9/4 second favourite broke well but lost her position at the 2nd bend, however this Oct 11 Droopys Maldini x Oakgrove Honey needed all her finishing power to fight back and grab the race in the shadow of the post in 24.11.
