Salad Dodger landed his first race since winning the 2014 English Derby in the heats of the Stadium Bookmakers Standard Trophy over 500 metres at Nottingham last night writes Jason Craddock.

Kevin Berwick’s runner was led to the last turn by Holden Fraser but went past to score by a head in 30.08sec.

Bruno Berwick, kennel hand to his father said afterwards: “There were people saying he would not win another race so it is good to prove them wrong.

“The dog was blowing a lot after his last trial, which was his first four bend workout for three months and he definitely needed the run so I’m hoping he can improve for next week’s final.”

Steve Race’s La Cuchilla went quickest when making every metre to hold Farran Heaslip by a short head in 29.94sec.

Honest John led from the opening turn in heat one to hold Rafas Wee Jet by three quarters of a length in 30.03sec.

Klockwork Konk landed the richest race on the card in the final of the Betfred Maiden Trophy over 480 metres.

Carol Weatherall’s Wicky John led to the third turn but Paul Sallis’s dog flew past to score a two length victory in 28.88sec.

In trials before racing, Newinn Yolo had his second run back since getting injured in the English Derby when clocking 17.91sec for 305 metres.

Jim Hayton’s Damson Jam went faster when stopping the clock at 17.81sec.

Gymcrack winner Stay Loose recorded 17.85sec for trainer Charlie Lister while Scottish Derby winner La Cuchilla registered 17.82sec.
