The first night of the 2020 Derby summarised in less than 500 words.

A great night for Pat Buckley with a 29-1 treble including the fastest performer of the night – Glengar Bale. Overall Irish Derby form held up well with Savana Cody (ex Newline Cody) also winning a heat.

Biggest shocks of the night, the elimination of Black Parachute, Roxholme Kristof and Hiya Boy in a poor night for the Keightley kennel. Antigua Romeo and Darbys Ranger also eliminated. A bad injury for Jimmy Gaskin’s Waikiki Keano.

For those with a keen interest in seeding, there was a marginal advantage to the railers. Of the 32 who went to traps, 18 qualified. 3 of the 8 middles got through and 4 of the 8 wide seeds.

Mark Pierrepont’s Derby Diary piece will be published tomorrow covering the entire first round and featuring his unique halfway sectionals.
