Irish racing is down to 18 tracks following the premature closure of the Brandywell track – often referred to by British racegoers as simply ‘Derry’.

The Northern Irish stadium, which also hosts Derry City FC, was due to close for development this coming weekend  but the last two meetings have been cancelled due to bad weather.

Racing manager Michael McLaughlin said: “The frost has been very severe and we had no choice. But we will definitely re-open at the end of 2017 with a brand new stadium. I would like to thank all the people who have supported us over the years and look forward to seeing them again next autumn.”
