Roger Cearns attended an exhibition of greyhound paintings last night and can be seen standing beside a depiction of the old Wimbledon Stadium which he hopes to buy and hang at Central Park.
This painting and others can be seen by clicking here. They are all by artist Katharine le Hardy.
Roger Cearns, promoter at Central Park said “Katharine has a studio behind the ex stadium and has been painting its demolition which she believes was a Wimbledon icon. The stadium was built in 1927 and was loved by the local population for greyhounds speedway and stock car racing plus, of course, its renowned Sunday market and the squash club I built that was demolished at the same time”
“Her paintings, in my opinion, are very good and I have made an offer and hope to buy the one of the grandstand which my father built out of war damage money as the original stand, built by my grandfather, was bombed”
Roger’s grandfather William John Cearns was an important figure in the early history of greyhound racing and West Ham United FC. He is cited in an interesting article on Wikipedia
