Towcester received 210 entries for the Star Sports English Greyhound Derby and face a contemplative 24 hours before determining whether or not to apply for permission to stage a qualifying round.
The are currently 18 runners in excess of the first round limit of 192 and racing manager Chris Page is delaying a decision until Wednesday afternoon.
He said: “I have said all the way through that I didn’t want any heats with ‘two to qualify’ but we are in a difficult position as to whether to speak to GBGB about staging qualifying heats.
“We have decided to leave a decision until after tomorrow’s trial session. If we have a few drop out and find ourselves at around the 200 figure, we will probably get natural wastage to get closer to the 192 by the time the competition starts.
“The problem is, if we do need a qualifying round, the draw will have to take place this weekend, and we need to give connections enough notice to make their plans.
“The longer it goes on, the more likely we are to get to 192 through natural wastage. It would be the easiest thing in the world to pick 18 as reserves, but you can’t move the goalposts at this stage.
“Clearly this will have to be looked at again next year though I cannot anticipate there being more greyhounds available than this year. If necessary we could even look at ‘fastest qualifiers’ rather like the Springbok, among a number of options.”
